December 2018 Principal’s Message

December 2018 Principal’s Message

Where do I start? Much has happened since my last newsletter. The biggest news though is that we are all under one roof.  The hard work of our grade 7-12 students had us moved from our temporary housing across the field into the school building in less than two hours.  I think they were a little excited to get into a ‘normal’ school building. Thanks for the many hands that made this possible.

Our basketball season is in full swing.  Please check the website for the league games and tournament draws. A huge thank you to our volunteer coaches who are taking time out of their busy schedules to help our student athletes develop their skills.  Please remember to adhere to our spectator code of conduct.  As well, a reminder of what I stated in last month’s message: “I love seeing all families come and support our teams, but if you bring little ones it’s not the job of our volunteer supervisors to be the babysitters.  Please keep your little ones with you in the gymnasium.  Two, clean up after a game is not the most enjoyable thing to do for our supervisors when all they want to do is go home.  Please do not bring any food or drinks into the gymnasium, except for water.  Three, cheer for all good plays and keep your thoughts about the referees or players that are not positive inside your head. They are doing the best they can. Lastly, please do not let your children bring basketballs with them to the game.  We will bring out a cart at half time which they can use if they are in stocking feet.”(November 2018 Stirling Principal’s newsletter)

This past weekend we hosted our very first grade 8 tournament.  Thank you to the parents who brought in yummy food for the coach’s room; to the student from our senior high Student Council who ran our concession selling delicious home-made pizzas; to the junior and senior high students who ran our score table and did an amazing job; thank you to staff members who gave of their time to supervise and finally for those who reffed the tournament games. Thank-you! It takes many to run a successful event.

With a new building comes new things.  Thank you to our parent council for furnishing our staffroom with two beautiful couches that fit the decor of the room. They are stunning and really help to create a calming atmosphere for our staff to enjoy.   Our students are enjoying the old comfy couches in the high school gathering area. This was a ‘win win’ situation for all of us.  The younger students are all looking forward to when they can be in that designated space.

The school’s modernization is coming along.  Finishing items are being addressed in individual classroom and hallways by Ward Brothers.  Divisional items are also being taken care of in not only the school but also renovating the Family Links building and the Community Centre to bring these spaces back to pre-school use. We are so thankful to the Mike Selk and the Village of Stirling for providing the school with these facilities while under this modernization.

The old gym is still under heavy construction.  The bleachers are in the theatre and the dry wall is up in all classrooms. Ward Brothers is hoping to have this completed by Christmas but that does not mean that it will be ready to be used as major theatrical systems will still need to be installed.  We are hoping that it will be ready to be used in March. Therefore, our Elementary Christmas concert will be held for the last time in our gymnasium on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 6:30.  No stage will be set up, but back drops and floor coverings will be used as family members will be sitting on the bleachers.

School website.  Once again, any information that you might need can be found on our school website, www.stirlingschool.ca Parent council will also be posting their events on the website.

Hot lunch order forms will be available on line at www.stirlingschool.ca or there will be a few available at the school office.  January’s hot lunch order form is due December 20th.

If you owe fees or want to e-transfer money to the school for events, please use the following to make this happen.  ssfees@westwind.ab.ca

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one a Merry Christmas and all the best in 2019.  Thanks for your continuous support to our school community. Enjoy the time with family and friends and time away from the normal routine.  Be safe and see you in the new year.
